Minerals can be broadly classified into 2 type i.e. metallic and non-metallic minerals. The metallic minerals are further classified as ferrous and non-ferrous minerals. While non-metallic minerals can be classified as fuel mineral and other non-metallic. Metal minerals are the ones that become sources of metals. Examples include iron ore, copper, gold etc. Non-metallic minerals can be of 2 types according to origin either organic like fossil fuels which are derived from buried animal and plant life. These minerals include coal and petroleum. Other non-metallic minerals are the ones that origin from inorganic substances and examples include mica, limestone and graphite.

Ferrous minerals are basis for the growth and development of metallurgical industries. Our country has good amount ferrous minerals both as reserves and for production. Examples of ferrous minerals are iron ore, manganese, chromite etc. India has the largest reserve of iron ore throughout Asia. In India, Odisha is the leading producer of Manganese. Presence of non-ferrous minerals in India is poor except bauxite. Other examples of non-ferrous minerals include bauxite, copper etc. Bauxite is used for manufacturing aluminium and found mostly in the peninsular hill ranges of India.
