Examine the significance of ‘Defence’ as a locational factor for rural settlements in the world.

One of the important factors determining the location for rural settlements in the world is defence. There may be times of political instability, war, hostility of neighbouring group in such cases villages are more likely to be built on defensive hills and island where security is more. Example of a good defensive site is seen in Nigeria where the upstanding inselbergs had formed it. Similarly, forts in India are generally built on hills or high grounds.
