An anther with malfunctioning tapetum often fails to produce viable make gametophytes. Give any one reason.

The tapetum is the innermost layer of microsporangium and nourishing the developing pollen grains. Tapetum malfunctioning results in insufficient nutrition of the pollen grains, and will not be able to produce viable male gametophytes.
