Excessive Use of Advertisements in Media

Abundance of advertisements in newspapers, magazines and even on television is wastage of both time and money of readers and viewers. People use these forms of media to gain information about the current happenings. But today newspapers and magazines have become a medium to publish advertisements.

Most of the newspaper is filled with advertisements of various brands and products. This leaves the readers disappointed as they are unable to satisfy their main need. There is a lot happening around us of which we are not aware. People rely on these sources to be aware of the current affairs. But the content is less and the advertisements are repetitive in nature. Advertisements are given the bigger columns and on television they are given more screen time. It is wastage of time, energy and money. It creates an unhealthy competition as the shift of the channels and editors is from showing important news to displaying maximum advertisements and getting maximum sponsors for their channels. This screen space can be given to some more meaningful and important information. This creates a bad impact on the readers and viewers as it is often misleading and confusing. Viewers are also irritated with frequent breaks and feel distracted as their focus breaks.

Therefore, advertisements are not unhealthy but its excessive use has affected its importance. It should be limited and important news should be given priority over such advertisements.

Health for All

By Ruchika

An NGO, ‘Health for All’ organised a health check-up camp in a slum at Amritsar. It conducted its health check-up in the largest slum area of Amritsar. This area was recognised to have poor hygiene because of which the infant mortality rate was too high.

People in these areas do not have regular water supply or electricity. Arrangements for the camp were made in the village hospital. The children are malnourished due lack of proper nutrition and are easily hit by diseases. The event was scheduled on 15th of July at 12:00 PM. The registration started 1 hour prior. Volunteers from the NGO had already begun the publicity of this event a week prior so that all the families were informed about its benefits. First step was a regular check up by the intern doctors if someone showed symptoms which required immediate medical attention they were called again to collect blood samples. The next day another batch of patients were checked. On the 3rd day of the camp, all the test reports were examined and proper medicines were prescribed. Also, the village hospital was supplied with emergency medicines which were not available before.

People came in large numbers and the 3 day camp was a huge success. On taking reviews about the camp and the treatment that was given all the people were very satisfied. They also suggested us to carry out such camps every month as it would provide them with medical assistance which was not available earlier. The satisfaction of the slum dwellers was the biggest achievement for the NGO as they were able to achieve their motto ‘Health for All’.
