This is a letter to draw your attention towards the situation of elders in our society. The rate of crime against elders is increasing day by day and on the contrary our concern for them in reducing. The elderly living alone in the cities are not safe.


Reports of violence against them are really very disturbing. The recent murder of two elderly persons has rocked the city. It seems the police are not taking adequate steps to make the elderly feel safe and secure. Not only the police but the family members are equally responsible for taking care of them. Some people might have just scrolled it as a news report but for some who have elders at their home and really care for them, this incident has created fear. Such murders take place for the greed of money. These people find it very easy to attack senior citizens because they won’t be able to fight back much and also because they already know about the lack of protection that they get. Despite all such crimes being reported there are no strict rules being introduced by the authorities to minimise such crimes. To start with, there could be a helpline number and a squad of police posted in residential areas so that they can be contacted easily and reach to help on time.


It is extremely important to draw the attention of the authorities towards this issue and find ways to ensure the safety of our elders in the society. I hope you will highlight this issue through your esteemed daily.
