What does BOD of a water body stand for? How is it related to water pollution?

BOD stands for Biological Oxygen Demand of a water body. It refers to the amount of oxygen that would be consumed if all the organic matter in one litre of the water were oxidised by the bacteria.


The BOD test measures the rate of uptake of oxygen by microbes in a sample of water and thus, it is the measure of organic matter present in a water body.


The more is the water pollution, more is the organic matter in the water body and hence more is the BOD.
