Suggest and describe a technique through which a virus-free healthy plant can be obtained from a diseased sugarcane plant.

The virus-free healthy sugarcane plant can be obtained by Meristem Culture.

Though the plant is virus infected, but the apical and axillary meristem is free of virus.


The meristem is removed from the plant and grown in-vitro by micropropagation. Hence, the plants produced are virus free.


The plats are genetically identical known as Somaclones.


Nutrient medium rich in vitamins, amino acids, sucrose inorganic salts and growth regulators like auxin, cytokinins etc is provided.
