(i)[Co(NH3)5Cl]2+: Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) ion


(ii) Potassium tetrachloridonickelate(II): K2[NiCl4]


Co-ordination complexes are named by IUPAC nomenclature as follows: For compound (i), the cobalt Co has oxidation number is +3. So Cobalt(III) is the base name. NH3 is a neutral molecule so it does not contribute to the base name. There are five NH3 ligands so the name starts with pentaammine. Cl- is named as chlorido. The ligands are placed in alphabetical order and is named as Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) ion. The charge of the ion is +2 because the overall charge of Co+3 and Cl- is +2.


For (ii), tetrachlorido is Cl4 and Nickelate is Ni. The overall charge of tetrachloridonickelate is -2. So, potassium (K+) will be K2 in order to make the ion neutral. The oxidation number of nickel is +2, thus the base name is (II). So the formula is K2[NiCl4].
