Q4 of 8 Page 3

Discuss the spatial patterns of female literacy in India in 2011 and bring out the reasons responsible for it.

The spatial patterns of female literacy within India in 2011 are discussed below:

(A) In India, the overall literacy was about 74.04 percent in 2011 whereas female literacy was around 65.46 percent.

(B) Whole literacy and female literacy is greater in comparison to the national average in most states from South India.

(C) Wide regional disparities exist in literacy rate across Indian states. There are states like Bihar wherein literacy rate is very low at about 63.82 per cent, and there are other states like Mizoram and Kerala which exhibit literacy rates of 91.58 and 93.91 percent, respectively.

The reasons for such spatial patterns are as follows:

(A) Northern states of India have low investment in education of female children as compared to male children.

(B) Urban areas give facilities to female easily in comparison to rural regions.

(C) The concern regarding security and safety of girls has resulted in disallowance of the child of most parents to study at distant locations.
