Most Indians depend on agriculture indirectly or directly for their subsistence. Thus, land resources become more significant. Significance of land resources can be understood by the following points:

(A) Unlike tertiary and secondary activities, agriculture tends to be a purely land-based activity. In simple words, the contribution of land within agricultural output is greater in comparison to its contribution to outputs in the other sectors. Thus, absence of access to land is directly related to incidence of poverty within rural regions.

(B) Quality of land possesses a direct bearing on the productivity of agriculture, which is false for other activities.

(C) Within rural regions, apart from its value like a productive factor, land ownership possesses a social value while serving as a security for credit, life contingencies or natural hazards. It also tends to add to social status.
