Assess the impact of COPRA on consumers.

COPRA refers to the Consumer Protection act of 1986.

● Under this act, three-tier quasi-judicial machinery at the district, state and national level that was set up for redressal of consumer disputes.


● The district-level court deals with the cases involving claims up to rupees 20 lakh. The state-level court deals with cases involving claims between 20 lakh and 1 crore. The national court deals with cases involving claims exceeding 1 crore rupees.


● If a case is dismissed at the state level, the consumer can also appeal to the higher-level courts.


● It has enabled consumers to have the right to represent in the consumer courts.


● It has led to the setting up of separate Department of consumer affairs in Central and state governments.


● It has led to an increase in the level of consumer awareness in India
