A political party is a group of people who have come together to contest elections and to hold power in the democratic government of the country.

The different functions of political parties in a democratic government are highlighted below:

a. The political parties put forward their candidates to contest in elections. These candidates are chosen by the top leaders or by the members of the party.

b. These political parties campaign for themselves during the election process. They explain the different policies and programs they would implement if selected.

c. The political party, which is selected by the voters of the democratic system plays an important role in making the laws of the country. No law can be implemented until a majority of the party supports it.

d. The political parties recruit different leaders, train them and make the ministers of different departments.

e. The party which has lost in the elections becomes the opposition party. They raise issues and concerns on the working of the the the ruling party. They often have different views and criticize the government for its failures.

f. A political party also listen to the general public demand and raise concerns. Many movements have been started to solve the problems faced by the people of the country. They shape public opinion.

g. A political party is a link between the government and the people. The general public can easily approach the local leader than the government official.
