Oxidation of CH3-CHO is easier than CH3-COCH3. Why?

The oxidation of ketones involves carbon-carbon bond cleavage to afford a mixture of carboxylic acids having lesser number of carbon atoms than the parent ketone.


Moreover, the aldehydes are more reactive than ketones because two alkyl groups reduce the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon more effectively than in former.


Due to these reasons, oxidation of CH3-CHO is easier than CH3-COCH3.
