‘When 350 British planes dropped half a million kilos of bombs in Ijmuiden’, the houses shook and trembled like wisps of grass in the wind. People had to form queue to get access to food and vegetables. The place was replete with epidemics. There was unavailability of doctors for their cars got stolen whenever they turned their backs to the automobiles. There were random and massive robberies and burglaries which were mostly conducted by children ranging from eight to eleven years of age. These children broke the windows of houses and stole whatever came their way. There was absolute anarchy and morality was at total loss in the lives of people.

The teenage son of Van Daans, Peter, is actually called up by the name Peter Van Pels. Formerly discovered by Anne as an indolent, loathsome, obnoxious and a delicate being, they later winded up on good terms. However, Peter doesn’t share his grounded convictions and beliefs with Anne.
