There are different mechanisms for crop variety improvement. These are:

Hybridization - It involves crossing of two genetically different varieties of plants. It can be done between two different plants, two species of different genetic or between same varieties of same species.

Genetic engineering - It involves producing genetically modified species by altering the gene code of the plant and getting the desired results.
