What is green house effect?

Solar heat when reradiated back from the earth is absorbed by various gases present in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide plays an important part here. This helps in keeping the earth warm and makes it habitable. But, over the years the proportion of carbon dioxide has increased manifold due to urbanization, industrialization, and increase in vehicular pollution. This is leading to an increase in earth temperature over the years and the phenomenon is known as global warming. Apart from carbon dioxide other gases such as nitrous oxide, methane, and cluoro fluoro carbon (CFC) also traps heat and are known as green house gases.
