Explain any three causes of river pollution in India.

Water or river pollution means one or more substances have built up in water to such an extent that they cause problems for animals or people.

Causes of pollution are:

i. The leading cause of river pollution is sewage efflux into rivers.

ii. Another cause of pollution is the human dumping of waste and other harmful substances into river water directly.

iii. Use of rivers to get rid of industrial processing waste by industries is becoming a threat to rivers and the marine ecosystem.

iv. The air pollution returns to ground through rains and contaminate groundwater and river waters.

v. Plastics are emerging a threat to rivers and sea as plastic takes many years to decompose and accumulation of plastic in rivers and sea is harmful to aquatic plants, animals results in polluting the water.

Measures to control this pollution are: Making people aware of the problem by education is the first step to solving or at least not increasing it. It can also be controlled by not discharging untreated sewage, solid wastes and garbage in rivers. By reducing agricultural run-off, preventing or controlling resource recovery in river channels, shipping discharges and marine operations, we can reduce the intensity of water pollution.
