European Union has become a supra national organization. Explain.

European Union had initially begun as a social force but now has become a political one. It acts now as a nation of its own. It has its own flag, anthem, currency etc. Its role as a supranational organization is mentioned below:

a) It has the biggest economy in the world with a GDP of $12 trillion dollars in 2005.

b) Its currency can pose as a threat to the US Dollar.

c) Its share of world trade is 3 times as compared to the US.

d) It holds a big influence with most of its neighbours.

e) It also has an important say in WTO.

f) The combined forces of the EU are the second largest in the world.

g) The total expenditure it incurs on defence is second after the US.

h) It is ranked second in terms of communication and technology.

i) Two of its members - Britain and France are permanent of the United Nations Security Council.

j) This has enabled it to ascertain certain political exercise as well.
