Q5 of 28 Page 57

Answer in about 100 - 120 words.

History, it is said, has many lessons to teach us; and there is another saying that history never

repeats itself. Explain the message conveyed by the two sayings?

History, it is said, has many lessons to teach us, and it does. However, there is yet another saying that history never repeats itself. While the two statements seem really contradictory, they are actually not, and can be understood with ease.

History has many lessons to teach us, from the examples of people and events to the causes of downfall and rises, and so on. However, that does not mean we can blindly ape whatever has already happened, and expect to achieve the same results. History never repeats itself, and so it is likely that neither the conditions nor the result will get replicated in absoluteness. Yet, the amount of information that history has to offer can teach us a lot about the driving forces that are at work when it comes to certain happenings around the world, and we can learn from these examples what these factors and forces were. Even if not the exact solution, we can at least learn how to arrive at the solution – that is what history tends to teach us.
