Why do you think Sampson was not able to decide about entering White's house?

Sampson bore a bad news for the White family, that is, the death of their only son Herbert. He was very apologetic as he had to disclose such an unfortunate news to Mrs. and Mr. White, that's why he was very reluctant to go inside the White's house. His constant movement suggests the fact that he was in dilemma, and seemed to be gathering courage in order to inform the White couple about the news.
