i) Who is 'I'? Whom does 'him' refer to?


ii) Why does the speaker make such a wish?

i) 'I' is Mr. White. 'Him' refers to his son Herbert.

ii) Mr. White had a premonition that maybe their second wish would result into the coming back of Herbert's body in a decayed form. That's why he quickly made his third wish and asked for his son to die again, peacefully, as he did not want another danger to befall his household.
