What apprehensions might Sergeant Morris have had in handing over the paw to anyone else? What was the basis of his apprehension?

Sergeant Morris was very reluctant while handing over the paw to the White family. He did not want anyone to own that paw because he was aware of the aftermaths it would bring to its owner. He knew that it was cursed and brought hellish consequences along. The basis of his apprehension lied in the fact that he himself had faced misery because of it, and wanted to destroy it forever so that no one gets to face the damage and destruction that he and the other owners had already underwent.

According to Morris, the monkey's paw was hexed by a Fakir in order to teach a lesson to mankind which is lost in greed and desire for more. Everyone on this earth had his fate already decided, and it was not their job to interfere in it. Hence the Fakir put the spell on the paw. As per Morris' knowledge, the previous owner of the paw underwent such misery that he had to ask for his death as his ultimate wish. He himself was a victim in the hands of the paw, so did not want anyone to possess it and go through any kind of irreparable damage.
