To protect himself from his 'assassin' Lord Weston ordered his secretary Roger to go downstairs immediately to lock, bar and chain all the doors and asked if there were any strangers in the house like workman or someone else. When Roger told him about the gardener who was cleaning the windows, Weston told him to send him away at once and told Roger to leave everything and go and lock the door behind him and also to close all the windows of the house. He also called his wife to come to him at once.
