Examine the importance of irrigation, in Indian context.

Irrigation consumes the maximum water in irrigation. The spatio-temporal variability in rainfall in the country leads to the rise of need for irrigation. The large tracts of the North-western India and Deccan plateau lack sufficient rainfall and make the area drought-prone. The importance of irrigation is as follows:

1. It enables the practice of multiple cropping.

2. Irrigated lands have higher agricultural productivity than unirrigated land.

3. A developed irrigation system makes possible the growth of high-yielding variety crops as they require regular moisture.

4. Irrigation has made possible the success of Green Revolution in states of Punjab and Haryana.
