Which chromosome carries the mutated gene causing β thalassaemia? What are the problems caused by the mutation?

β-thalassemia is caused by the mutant gene carried by chromosome number 11. It causes the formation of abnormal haemoglobin molecules that result in anaemia.

• Thalassemia - autosomal-linked recessive disease


• Two types- α and β


• α-thalassemia: Chromosome number 16 carries mutant gene


• β-thalassemia: Chromosome number 11 carries mutant gene
