Why is Eichhornia crassipes nicknamed as “Terror of Bengal”?

Eichhornia crassipes or The plant water hyacinth is nicknamed as the "Terror of Bengal" as it is seen to grow at an alarming spreading on the surface of a water body. This in turn does not allow light to enter the water bodies and it also causes an increase in the oxygen demand. This leads to the death of fishes and other aquatic organisms in the water.
