According to Global Hunger Index 2014 two billion people suffer from hidden hunger. Apply your knowledge of plant breeding techniques to suggest a programme to improve public health. Specify four objectives of the programme. Also mention one example of such a produce.

A programme which could be used to improve public health is Biofortification. It includes adding increased levels of fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins to the growing crop.

Objectives of the programme:


1. Increased mineral content in the crop.


2. Increased vitamin content in the crop.


3. Increased fats and carbohydrates.


4. Increased proteins in the crop yield.


Example:


In the year 2000, maize hybrids having double the quantity of amino acids Lysine and Tryptophan than the original crop were produced.
