Q13 of 55 Page 1

What are isomers? Draw the structure of two isomers of butane, C4H10. Why can’t we have isomers of first three numbers of alkane series?

Isomers are the organic compounds which have same molecular formula but have different structures.

The various Isomers of butane C4H10 are as follows:

1) N-butane

Or

2) 2-Methyl Propane

Or

We don’t have isomers of first three members of alkane series which are Methane, Ethane and Propane. Methane consists only one carbon atom, Ethane has two carbon atoms and Propane has three carbon atoms due to less no. of carbon atoms, it is impossible to arrange carbon atoms in different manners.
