Q11 of 55 Page 1

An element 'M' has atomic number 12:

(a) Write its electronic configuration.

(b) State the group to which 'M' belongs.

(c) State the period to which 'M' belongs.

(d) State the valency of 'M'.

(e) Is 'M' a metal or a non-metal?

(f) Write the formula of its oxide.

(a) The Electronic configuration of the element M = 2, 8, 2

(b) Group no is equal to the valence electrons for 1 to 3 valence electrons. So, 'M' belongs to the 2nd group.

(c)The period number will be given by the no. of shells present. So, 'M' belongs to the 3rd period.

(d) Since the element has 2 valence electrons and is therefore stable. So, Valency of 'M' is 2 .

(e)Elements with valence electron 1,2 and 3 are metals. ‘M’ has 2 electrons in its valence shell. So it is a metal.

(f) The formula of its oxide can be calculated as:

So, the formula for its oxide will be M2O2.
