Q14 of 55 Page 1

F, Cl and Br are the elements each having seven valence electrons. Which of these (i) has the largest atomic radius, (ii) is most reactive? Justify your answer stating reason for each.

(i) Out of F, Cl and Br, Bromine has the largest atomic radius because the size of the atom increase due to introduction of new electron shell when we move down in the group in periodic table.

(ii) Fluorine is the most reactive in F, Cl and Br. This is because as we go down in a group in periodic table, there is increase in the size of the atom which results in decrease in the forces of attraction between the nucleus and the outermost electrons and the tendency to lose the electrons increases and to gain, decreases. Therefore, it results in decrease in the reactivity down the group.
