(ii) C₄H₆

Homologous series is collection of compounds that have the same general formula, varying by a single parameter i.e. length of carbon chain. These have functional groups like alkanes, alkenes, alkynes etc.

i) C₂H₄- is alkene, its general formula C_nH_2n, so the next homologue will be:

Put n = 3 in the general formula, C_nH_2n

C₃H_3×2 = C₃H₆

ii) C₄H₆- is alkyne, its general formula C_nH_2n-2, so the next homologue will be:

Put n = 5 in the general formula C_nH_2n-2, we get,

C₅H_2×5-2 =C₅H_10-2= C₅H₈
