In Figure 4, ABCD is a square of side 4 cm. A quadrant of a circle of radius 1 cm is drawn at each vertex of the square and a circle of diameter 2 cm is also drawn. Find the area of the shaded region. (Use π = 3.14)

Area of the square = Side × Side


= 4 × 4 = 16 cm2


Area of 4 quadrants (circles) = 4 × 1/4 π (r)2


= 4× 1/4 × 22/7 × (1)2 = 22/7 cm2


Area of the circle at the center = πr2


= 22/7 × (1)2 = 22/7 cm2


Area of shaded portion = Area of the square (Area of 4 quadrants + Area of the circle at the center)


= 16 – (22/7 + 22/7)


= 16 – (44/7)



= 9.71 cm2
