The two main causes of pollution of water of river Ganga are as follows:

1. Disposing of industrial waste such as chemicals and other poisonous substances into river.

2. Due to various human activities, river Ganga is getting polluted such as immersing the ash into water, bathing into the river etc.

Pollution and contamination of river water prove harmful for the health of the people of neighbouring areas as the industrial waste is thrown into the water due to which it becomes unfit for drinking and other consumptions. People living in the neighbouring areas, uses this water for their use and drinking purpose. As a result, they suffer from various water-borne diseases such as Cholera and Typhoid. Moreover, increase in the water pollution also affects the life under water i.e. fishes and other animals which live under water also gets affected.
