What is meant by homologous series of carbon compounds? Classify the following carbon compounds into two homologous series and name them.

C3H4 C3H6 C4H6 C4H8 C5H8 C5H10

The series which consists of similar structures and similar chemical properties in which the successive compounds differs by a CH2 group is termed as homologous series.

The two characteristics of homologous series are as follows:


1. The members of the homologous series consists of same general formula such as Alkanes have general formula CnH2n+2


2. The two adjacent homologues have a difference of molecular mass of 14 u.


The compounds can be classified as follows:


Propene C3H6 , Butene C4H8, Pentene C5H10 belongs to Alkenes.


Propyne C3H4 , Butyne C4H6 and Pentyne C5H8 belongs to alkyne group.
