The first trophic level in a food chain is always a green plant. Why?

There is energy transfer in the each trophic level in a food chain. Green plants uses solar energy through chlorophyll and convert it into chemical energy using process of photosynthesis. This energy is stored in form of carbohydrates. This energy is then transferred to next trophic level. In this way, the first trophic level in a food chain is always a green plant.
