Why does the ancient Mariner compel the wedding guest to listen to his story?

The wedding guest were compelled to listen to the story of the Mariner as by sharing his sadness with the guest it would help him to lessen his guilt. He had been carrying a load of guilt for killing an innocent bird so, to get rid of the sorrow and guilt he wanted to the wedding guest to listen to his story.
