Helen could recall her first meeting with Dr. Bell as a child, she felt he understood her and she ‘loved him at once’. Dr. Bell referred Helen to the Perkins Institution in Boston and Anne Sullivan was sent to Helen’s home to begin her education. Helen was extremely appreciative of Dr. Bell for providing her so many opportunities. With time they both developed a good, loving parent-child kind of relationship. In 1888, Helen met President Grover Cleveland and in 1893 she went to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago with Dr. Bell and learned a lot about modern science and technology from him. Dr Bell also helped her raise fund so that she could attend a regular college and therefore joined the Radcliffe College in Boston. Hence Helen’s contact with Dr. Bell raised her perception and understanding of the world. She could now achieve her desired heights, make new discoveries and broaden her horizons.
