Shona’s mother is four times as old as Shona. After five years, her mother will be three times as old as Shona (at that time). What are their present age?

Let, Shona’s age = x


Shona’s mother’s age = 4x


According to problem,


⇒ 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5)


⇒ 4x + 5 = 3x + 15


⇒ x = 10


∴ Shona’s age = x = 10 years


Shona’s mother’s age = 4x = 40 years
