Q3 of 25 Page 1

State the points at which sanskritisation has been criticized.

Sanskritisation is a meticulous form of social change instituted in India. The concept 'Sanskritization' was first introduced by Prof. M. N. Srinivas

Definitions

M. N. Srinivas defined it as "a low or middle Hindu caste, or tribal or another group, changes its customs, ritual ideology, and way of life in the direction of a high and frequently twice-born caste. Generally, such changes are followed by a claim to a higher position in the caste hierarchy than that traditionally conceded to the claimant class by the local community”

Criticisms

1) The weakness of the concept of sanskritisation is that it is only concerned with the culture.

2) The concept of sanskritisation is based on hierarchy. In contemporary India, democratisation has become a new value; hierarchical transformation is increasingly becoming weak.

3) Sanskritisation has the idea of India society as that of caste society. It forgets that Indian society is a plural society which does not discriminate individuals on the basis of caste.

4) Sanskritisation shows suppressed inter-class hostility.

5) It refers only to social change in the caste hierarchy. And therefore sanskritisation has incomplete useful ness.

6) Sanskritisation though wider in scope remains restricted to a few castes found in a specific region.

7) Sanskritisation primarily works in cultural circumstances and not in structural terms.
