How has colonialism impacted our country ?

In the mid-eighteenth century, India became one of Great Britain's most important colonies. The impact of colonialism in India has both positive and negative results. The colonialism influences the social, cultural, economic and political life of Indians.

The impacts can be summarised as:

1. The partition of India into three countries: India, Pakistan and (eventually) Bangladesh. The partition of India-Pakistan led to one of the largest migrations in history, as many moved from India to Pakistan and vice-versa.

2. Many new roads, railways, and harbors were built, and a telegraph system was created.

3. Technological advances and manufactured goods were advanced

4. Worst famines in human history. The famine of Bengal in 1943 led to genocide (deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious or national group).

5. April 1919 saw thousands of peaceful protesters demonstrated against British colonial rule in Amritsar. British troops killed up to 1000 protesters.

6. Britain's made a negative impact on India after colonialism too. Britain continued to interfere in Indian politics. The most significant example of this was in 1984 when the British government counseled the Indian government over Operation Blue Star.

7. Colonization pressurize people from subordinated culture to denigrate themselves

8. Indians became ignorant of history and it led to self-depreciation and continued as victims of the British rule.

9. 'Educational institutions' were established in the country, but the agenda was to erase the thought of freedom from the minds of Indian youth. They also induced the 'value' of the British presence in the subcontinent.

Six decades of self-downgrading have not helped Indians to be progressive. The British rule had made unconstructive impacts on us when compared to the constructive ones.
