The manuscripts could not satisfy the increasing demand for books in Europe because of the following reasons:


a. Copying the text from manuscripts was difficult and it consumed a lot of time.


b. Manuscripts were fragile and were difficult to handle.


c. It was not easy to carry around the manuscripts easily.

Charles Dickens wrote the first serialised novel ‘Pickwick Papers’. This was published by Chapman and Hall. He wrote about the terrible effects of industrialization on People’s lives. Hence, the publication of this novel became a notable event of 1836.
