Describe any three factors that are responsible for breaking down of the caste system in India.

The caste system in India is breaking down because of the following factors:

a. Social reformers like Gandhiji, Ambedkar and Phule struggled hard to promote a casteless society.

b. Also, large scale urbanisation, economic development, increase in the literacy rate, education etc., have put an end to the false notions of the caste system.

c. These days children are not compelled to take up the profession of their father or mother. Occupational mobility is made possible.

d. Constitutional provisions such as Right to Equality and reservation policies have helped in the upliftment of the socio-economic position of the lower castes.

Thus, the caste system is slowly disappearing in India.
