Q1 of 30 Page 26

Answer the questions briefly:

Insects can annoy us as much as they delight. How does the writer explain this contrast?

The writer, Robert Lynd, beautifully explains the contrast between the annoying buzzing and delightful humming of insects. He portrays the difference through the imagery of the garden and the bedroom, and paints a clear picture of how an insect can turn from charming to infuriating in no time. The humming of insects seems soothing and is comparable to the beauty of spring when one is sitting in the garden, but irritating and drill-like when one is relaxing in his bedroom. The writer goes on to explain that this may perhaps be because of the type of insects invading the bedroom – usually bees and mosquitoes. Nevertheless, insects can always pose huge contrasts when it comes to the sounds they create.
