Q2 of 30 Page 26

Read the extracts and answer the questions that follow:

'The world will always remain to a child the chief toy, and the hum of insects as enhancing as the hum of a musical top' (Para 4)

i) Why is the world the chief toy to a child?

ii) What enchants the child as much as the hum of a musical top?

iii) Give another word for 'enchanting'.

i) The world is a chief toy to a child, and will always remain so. A toy is very dear to nay child, and brings it immense happiness and joy. To top that, if something is a chief toy, it means the child holds it dearest to his heart and is very happy at the sight of it.

Comparing the world to a child’s chief toy, the author wishes to emphasize that a child, unaware of the harsh realities of the world, remains delusional about it at large. To a child, the world is a fairy-tale, where he expects everyone to be harmless and kind, expecting nothing but happiness and smiles in return. The child is very interested and curious about the world, and is oblivious about the fact that it is rather dark and selfish.

ii) The hum of insects, that is the beautiful sounds of nature, enchant the child as much as the hum of musical top. The child doesn’t know to distinguish between the natural and the artificial, and yet, nature seems as soothing to him as does his dearest toy.

iii) Another word for ‘enchanting’ could be ‘charming’.
