Music is definitely one of the best forms of art the world has been witnesses to. I was completely unaware of the magic of music until a few years ago, and had no idea what a profound impact it can have on our minds and hearts. But one day completely changed the way I look at music, and enchanted me. Let me tell you about that day today.

I was at my father’s annual prize giving ceremony. They have such things in offices too, for the most hard-working employees and the company’s achievements. That year was even more special because of the fact that the company had completed twenty years of service. There was great food and some cultural programmes lined up as well.

I knew I would be extremely bored of it all, and would have to greet a thousand unknown faces and be at my best behaviour all throughout. What I didn’t know was that I would actually enjoy the evening and take back a lot from it.

While we were sitting in the cultural programme and the host kept making boring jokes, I struggled to be seated. My father had urged me to come because of some special instrumental band that had come all the way from Chennai, and my father seemed really excited about them. He was into music, he says, in his college days, but never got an opportunity to take it any further. I had to wait for the host to finish talking and the performance to begin.

The next twenty minutes were just mesmerizing. The beautiful notes, the harmony of the musical instruments and the manner in which the music simply soothed me so deeply took me back by surprise. I had never heard something like this before – so enchanting and so relaxing! Trust me when I tell you, I was among the few who stood up to give the performers an ovation along with my father, followed by the entire hall.

To this day, that performance inspires me. This is also the reason why I have opted for music lessons. My father is happy I am fulfilling his dream, and I am happy I discovered something so beautiful midway.
