Q2 of 21 Page 43

Read the extracts and answer the questions that follow:

“With absence of mental stimulus of this kind, human co-operation would be entirely impossible” (Para 8). Explain the "mental stimulus" that is referred to? When can it become very dangerous to society?

Mental stimulus is referred to the knowledge through perception, reasoning or intuition. It has been observed that people have a desire for the approval of one's fellow-man certainly which is one of the important binding powers of society. These complex feelings can be both constructive and destructive together. The desire for approval and recognition is a healthy motive but the destructive part can be very dangerous to society as the desire to be acknowledged as better, stronger or more intelligent than a fellow being or fellow scholar easily leads to an excessively egoistic psychological adjustment, which may become injurious for the individual and for the community. To avoid it, the school and the teacher must guard against employing the easy method of creating individual ambition, in order to induce the pupils to diligent work.
