Answer in Detail

Give a note on the water resources of Tamil Nadu.

The major source of water in Tamil Nadu is the North-east and South-west monsoons since it has no perennial rivers. During South West monsoon rains, the Cauvery River in Karnataka dams get filled and the Cauvery River in Tamil Nadu gets water when the rain are high in the catchment areas. The North-East monsoon longs from October to December and contributes to storage of waters in reservoirs, lakes, ponds and wells. Water bodies that are conventional in nature like the lakes, ponds and canals also serve as a water resource. There are 7985 small lakes, 33142 large lakes, 15 lakh open wells and 3,54,000 bore wells in Tamil Nadu which contribute largely to agriculture. Groundwater is a major source of water in Tamil Nadu. Looking at the dependency on groundwater it is urgent and necessary to control and accordingly regulate the usage of groundwater.
