Discuss about the source of irrigation for agriculture.

The various water sources for irrigation for agriculture are wells, canals and lakes. Wells comprise of 62% of the water sources, canals comprise 24% of the water sources and lakes comprise 14% of the water sources. There are other conventional sources of water which are 2,239 canals running through Tamil Nadu covering a length of 9,750 km. Also there are 7,985 small lakes, 33,142 large lakes, 15 lakh open wells and 3,54,000 bore wells which can be used as a source of irrigation for agriculture. A major source of water for irrigation remains groundwater.
