Market gardening is practiced near urban areas. Why?

Market gardening is a type of agriculture that produces high-value crops such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

They mainly operate in urban areas due to the following reasons:


a. They have a higher demand and consumption rate in urban areas.


b. The size of the farms is small and is located in the vicinity of a good transportation facility.


c. They are linked to areas of urban centres where the high-income group of consumers resides.


d. It is both labour intensive and capital intensive, which focuses on the use of irrigation, HYV seeds, fertilizers, insecticides, greenhouses and artificial heating in the colder areas.


e. It is well developed in densely populated in industrial districts such as northwest Europe, northeast USA, and the Mediterranean area.
