What is intensive subsistence farming? Explain its two types.

Intensive subsistence agriculture is practiced in the densely populated regions of monsoon Asia. It is divided into two types:

a. Intensive subsistence agriculture dominated by wet paddy cultivation.


i. It is dominated by rice crop.


ii. The landholding is small due to the high density of population.


iii. Limited use of machinery.


iv. It is labour intensive.


b. Intensive subsistence agriculture dominated by crops other than paddy.


i. It is dominated by wheat, barley, and sorghum.


ii. It is grown in Northern China Manchuria, North Korea, and North Japan.


iii. In India, it is mostly grown in the western parts of Indo Gangetic plains.


iv. Since it is practiced in dry areas, an irrigation system is used.
